Laser Dentistry

As dental technology improves, Dr. Chang researches and implements newer technology that will make your treatment more successful, comfortable, and efficient. One of the technologies he introduced into our Irvine, CA dental office is laser dentistry.

Laser dentistry is a versatile tool in treating a wide variety of dental conditions from soft tissue surgeries to laser teeth whitening – and even pain relief.

Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you may wonder about the best way to proceed and what treatment can provide you with the best outcome. Laser surgery for periodontal disease has made periodontal surgery a much more precise and positive experience for our patients compared to traditional surgery options.

Because traditional surgery requires cutting and often stitching, healing times could be prohibitive and unpleasant. Laser dentistry has brought us the ability to have more comfortable surgery with less bleeding and faster healing times.

Soft tissue laser treatment also makes cosmetic treatment easier! Addressing a "gummy" smile with laser gingival sculpting provides more esthetic results.

Other treatment options available include frenectomies, canker sore treatment, cold sore treatment, and crown lengthening.

Laser Treatment for TMJ Pain

Jaw joint disorders and pain are commonly referred to as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, shortened to TMJ or TMD. Often, TMD causes chronic pain and inflammation. While treatment with over-the-counter pain medication, BOTOX injections, and muscle relaxers provides some patients with relief, others are left feeling like chronic TMJ pain is an ongoing battle.

By treating the TMJ area with laser light energy, we increase the blood flow to the area and reduce inflammation. By breaking the inflammation cycle, lasers encourage your jaw joint and muscles to heal, relax, and return to a more comfortable state.

By reducing inflammation, you may achieve greater function and range of motion in your jaw joints. Additionally, since your jaw muscles, facial muscles, and head muscles are interconnected, reducing jaw inflammation using laser energy helps relieve other symptoms including headaches, neck aches, and shoulder pain.

Laser Teeth Whitening

If you drink coffee, red wine, or soda, or eat colorful fruits and vegetables, your teeth will inevitably collect stains over time. Few of us escape darker teeth as we age, and certain habits, such as tobacco use, accelerate the staining process.

We can use laser energy to eliminate years of stains in one office visit that lasts about 20 minutes. We apply the laser light to the stains on your teeth, and you can leave the office up to six shades lighter in one appointment!

Our patients truly appreciate the instant results they achieve with laser teeth whitening and often report less sensitivity than with take-home whitening kits or over-the-counter products.
